About

The story of how we started

The Spekboom Co story starts with a dietitian, a geography teacher, a landscaper and a beautiful plant that intrigued us on many levels. We’ve been using Spekboom plants for 15 years in landscaping. It forms the most beautiful evergreen hedges, larger trees as well as small shrubs.

It is commonly known that the Spekboom has the ability to remove a large amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, these extraordinary plants have a lot more to them, than just that. The more we studied the possibilities of this wonder plant, the more our curiosity took over. Spekboom leaves are high in vitamin C and have traditionally been used to treat sore throats and dehydration. The leaves can also be used as an antiseptic to treat insect bites and sunburn. However, what really caught our attention was the zesty taste of  the Spekboom leaves. This finally got us cooking with it.

The road to our products

It took months of testing and trying. We had to work with what little information there is available on cooking with Spekboom. We developed our own very special technique to cook with the leaves. It was important that our products be both delicious and versatile. We believe we created just that. Our first products were our Deli range – the chutney, jam and pickle. We are extremely proud of these products.

Since the start of The Spekboom Co story our range have evolved from just cooking with Spekboom, to including Home, Linen and Beauty products. We also incorporate other local products that are eco-friendly and sustainably sourced.
